With retirement home costs ranging from $1,500 to $6,000 a month, it’s important to make an educated choice when picking a potential home for you or a loved one. Retirement home costs are typically dependent on three factors: level of care needs, location, and the type of retirement home you choose. Determine these factors first (especially care needs!), then research the associating costs.

For those who want independence and require little to no support:

Independent living communities (also known as 55+ communities) come in a variety of styles and with a variety of amenities and services. Some even feature resort-style private suites on beautifully maintained properties! These homes are typically private pay and, depending on how all-inclusive they are, can be on the more expensive side. It is important to remember that everything is included in your monthly fee: meals, utilities, housekeeping, social activities, transportation, and more.

For those who want independence, but need a little bit more support:

Assisted and supportive living communities focus on helping residents with basic tasks, if needed, while they enjoy the amenities of normal life. The cost of care in an assisted living facility can vary widely depending on what level of care you need and the community’s level of luxury. Like independent living, EVERYTHING is included in your monthly fee – food, care, social calendar. When considering the cost of an assisted living community, it’s important to remember that all these services are covered and could, inevitably, lead to better care, higher quality of life and healthier, more comfortable aging.

For those who need professional everyday care:

Long term care facilities offer complex care and 24/7 professional nursing care. These types of seniors communities can often be partly paid for through government subsidies. Spots in subsidized long term care are usually determined solely by need and can have long waitlists. Private pay long term care does exist, but can be costly because they include fees for staffing 24/7 professional nurses and care aides. Again, when considering long term care costs, look into what included: accommodation, care plans, clinical support, ongoing social and recreational activities, meals, laundry, regular check-ins, specialized care services, housekeeping, and so much more.
